Job Description Summary

The primary function is to provide an environment that allows students, staff, faculty and visitors to interact in safe and secure surroundings. The role is to actively support the educational activities of the college through safety, security and law enforcement services. These services will meet the highest level of approval and the candidate will constantly strive to anticipate the needs of the Community College.

Duties

• Maintains complete confidentiality with regard to all campus information no matter the source, content, or how the information is acquired.
• Utilizes technology such as computers, radio systems, telephones, and other communication equipment
• Manages and directs employees in general patrol, traffic enforcement and investigative work.
• Establishes employee work expectations, reviews reports and assesses officer performance based on standards.
• Possesses exceptional communication and negotiation skills to maintain the dual relationship of law enforcement and public service to a constituency of students, faculty, staff, and visitors.
• Enforces the laws of the State of North Carolina and the United States.
• Supervision and/or management of officers or other departmental personnel in their responses to routine calls, emergencies, and other law enforcement services provided.
• Evaluates appropriateness of officer responses; designate assignments; direct needed resources; and interpret laws, ordinances, and department policies and procedures.
• Provides orientation and training of officers, assessments of officers and/or other departmental personnel on a shift, conducting pre-shift briefings, review of all reports and investigations accomplished during a shift, activity coordination, conducting performance reviews, and providing input concerning operational planning.
• Applies a working knowledge of the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (Clery Act), particularly as it relates to crime reporting requirements and to police response to immediate and potential threats to campus safety.
• Responsible for determining the closure of campus due to inclement weather, while serving as the shift supervisor.
• Responsible for handling emergency situations, per protocols, while serving as the shift supervisor.
• Responsible for handling student incidents, while serving as the shift supervisor.

Minimum Requirements

1. High school diploma or GED, with Law Enforcement Certification.
2. Five (5) years or more of full-time experience with a NC law enforcement agency
3. Current certification as a law enforcement officer in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission or the ability to achieve certification within one year of employment.
4. Must be at least 21 years of age
5. Valid NC Drivers’ License
6. Ability to pass a criminal background investigation
7. Ability to work evenings and/or rotating shifts
8. North Carolina Law Enforcement Certificate
9. DCI Certification
10. CPR Certification

Preferred Qualifications

1. AAS Degree or higher level of education
2. Three (3) years or more of full-time supervisory experience with a NC law enforcement agency
